What is Indian clothing?
What makes Indian fashion so unequalled is the fact that you'll find all the provinces of the country have its own distinct
traditional clothing for men and women. For example, the salwaar kameez is the cultural attire of women in the Punjab, the Mekhala Chadar is worn by Assamese women, and so forth. Nevertheless, all types of Indian clothing look elegant, stylish and beautiful, Indians wear their clothes with a great deal of pride. Indians love to put on a show for the annual festivities and special occasions -these are the times to see the traditional sari, kurta pajama or dhoti.
A sari is long strip of colorful multi-patterned cloth seductively wrapped around the body, teemed with a blouse (or choli)! It's the traditional dress for the Indian Woman and there are many styles to choose from.
The blouse worn with sari is also called the choli or ravika. The salwaar kameez, on the other hand, is the most omnipresent of all traditional ladies attire in India. As a matter of fact its so popular in the Punjab thats its often referred to as the "Punjab Suit".
The Indian man's traditional dress consists of the kurta and pyjama, dhoti, lungi and other dresses. The kurta is similar to wearing a long loose long shirt that just about reaches the knees, whereas the Pyjama is a lightweight drawstring trouser. The men's dhoti is a rectangular piece of unstitched cloth about four or five metres in length, wrapped about the waist and the legs and knotted at the waist. The Dhoti is known by a variety of names such as the Laacha in Punjabi, Mundu in Malayalam, Dhuti in Bangla.
Indian fashion is no longer restricted to the Indian sub continent, with the mass movements of people and
fashions across the world, more and more people are now familiar with Indian clothes and many western designers have modelled the latest fashions on Asian style fashions, many actresses turn up for events wearing a sari or shalwar Kameez - we even saw Posh Spice or Victoria Beckham
wearing a sari for vogue ..and she loved the experience of trying on all the different Indian bridal wear, the ‘maang tikka’ and ‘haath zeb to the gorgeous lehengas and the like!
